The Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling began as a national PBS TV series and community engagement project, Family Pictures USA that aimed to elevate underrepresented community stories through the lens of the family album. The television series was broadcast to audiences of over 5.3 million people and grew out of research into crowd-sourced community storytelling.
Family Pictures USA emerged out of Digital Diaspora Family Reunion LLC (DDFR), a transmedia community engagement project which has built and refined a community photo sharing model that uses photography, film, live events, social media, and storytelling to expand on family histories. DDFR has held live events in cities across the USA and around the globe. To date, we’ve interviewed over 2,500 people and gathered in excess of 30,000 images. We’ve shared our content through social media, television, articles, newspapers, and radio, receiving over 70 million impressions across these platforms.
This initiative has grown into a DEI training program used by Fortune 500 companies across America. The Family Pictures USA series eventually evolved to include the Institute for Inclusive Storytelling at Yale University, a center dedicated to scholarly evaluation of the power of sharing personal histories.
