The Mission of Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling Inc. is to revitalize our connections to one another at the level of our common humanity. Whether in our work, our communities, our neighborhoods or on our block, now more than ever, we need to radically change the visual narrative of what it means to be American, of what an inclusive society looks like. We need to engage in a meta-dialogue about what really matters, who we really are, how we really see ourselves and what our shared values, common experiences and essential humanity truly are. Because these are the ties that bind us all together as one people, one race...the Human Race.
Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling is grounded in the belief that when people share their private, family photographs and stories in a public forum, they create collective narratives that underscore shared values, common experiences and connections between people that may have been hidden, under-appreciated or unknown.
Participants in our Community PhotoSharing events and public marquee performances build close, intimate bonds with each other across perceived differences of age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference or class.
People attending our events have: discovered unknown family connections; uncovered little known histories; learned about people from different cultures; and seen America through alternative family experiences. In this way, participants become part of an enlarged communal “family” that connects them to people in their broader community.
If the goal of community health is to increase social cohesion, then Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling is an effective and proven instrument for attaining it.
Family Pictures Institute for Inclusive Storytelling works at each of these nodal points – the family, group and neighborhood – using cross-sector collaborations to activate a local community to collectively share their family photos and stories as a means to co-creatively build stronger community through an expansion of mutual trust, empathy and understanding.
"I hope this project inspires all, its inspired me to call up my relatives, the young folk who are doing the family tree, to know the people who took the photographs."
– Clarence Page, Journalist
"I can’t begin to tell you how moving yesterday was for me. There’s something about photos and the stories they evoke that can make one feel so connected to this world, especially in moments when we feel like outsiders, nomads, looking for a place of belonging. So, thank you, my dear, for doing this in Harlem and more importantly, FOR Harlem. This community (like so many others) deserved to be validated in so many ways, you are a part of that blessing. And thank you for letting me share my Guyana story."
– Grace Ali, Artist, Curator and Publisher Of Note Magazine
"The two-hour discussion left me continually inspired and in admiration of Family Pictures USA's mission. As a USC Film/Television major and first-gen immigrant, I have a tireless work ethic, a strong academic foundation to take on any task I’m given, no matter how big or small… Family Pictures USA gave me a window into the largely unrecorded universe, which is aligned with my own interests in telling the stories of the forgotten people. I wish to learn from your inspiring and loving team and hope that one day I can inspire others to join in finding illumination of the once veiled nooks.”
– Hongman Zhang
“It was rich and full of beautiful stories. This is such a great and valuable project… I immensely enjoyed this presentation.”
“This conversation was such a delightful and powerful way to lift up these stories, our stories. I didn't imagine I'd stay the whole way through, and I did. So moving.”
“Really loving this exchange, and witnessing the love and respect shared among longtime friends and colleagues.”
"This is so amazing! Thank YOU for including me in this magical evening. I am so delighted to have been a part of it – and to have been part of this wonderful family of filmmakers and storytellers."
- Luchina
