This is the story of a father-daughter attorney team, John and Kristen Elmore, taking on Silicon Valley social media companies and a firearm company to hold them accountable for their role in perpetuating racist violence.
On May 14, 2022, a racially motivated shooter targeted Top’s grocery store in Buffalo, killing 10 Black community members, thereafter named “the Jefferson 10.”
The shooting occurred in the East Side neighborhood of Buffalo, which has historically suffered from redlining, rendering it a food desert. When Top’s initially opened, it provided a solution for food access. This event traumatized the neighborhood, leaving community members searching for safety and stability, and leaving the only grocery store in the neighborhood with a memorial in its parking lot.
The documentary is a quest for opening up archives of the law, and the archives of the family.
While we delve into the impact of violence on a community, and how it is intertwined with a history of violence against the community through redlining, we also resist the narrative that a place is forever ruined, doomed, or marred because a tragedy occurred there.
Viewers will get an intimate look into the homes and lives of this community fighting for justice. We visit a community television station, a cigar shop, a coffee shop, a community newspaper, and a youth boxing gym, meeting people in the community and following the lives of individuals–all just blocks from where the tragedy took place.
As a team, John and Kristen are not only skilled attorneys, but empathetic listeners, storytellers, and community stewards.
